How To Tile Your Floor

Thursday, January 28th, 2010

If you want to completely change a room, the most dramatic change you can make is to install a new floor. But should you choose bamboo laminate flooring, vinyl plank flooring, or even carpeting?

When homeowners are deciding on a type of tile to use in their rooms, ceramic tile is usually near the top of the list. Ceramic tile is so popular because of its versatility. It’s attractive, it’s durable. And, it lasts a long time.

In laying ceramic tile, preparation of the floor is critical. The most important thing is that you start with a clean, flat floor. That means removing all carpeting, old tile, nails, and so on. If the floor is unlevel, you should take steps to level it. If necessary, you may have to lay a sub-flooring over the existing floor in order to get a nice flat surface.

When the sub-flooring has been prepared, the next step is to choose your starting point.

A professional will normally choose to lay tile starting at the center of the area and move outwards from there. The center of the room is the focal point for people entering it and you want to make sure that you get that right.

When you have found the center, you simply snap chalk lines to help guide yourself in the laying of the first tiles. When you’ve reached this point, you’ve completed the most difficult part of your task.

Going forward, your tasks are relative simple. You’ll primarily be mixing the tile adhesive, applying the adhesive to the back of the tiles, and laying it on the floor – always moving out from the center of the room towards the four walls. It may be necessary to cut tile pieces as you get near to the wall or corners.

When the tile adhesive is dry, apply grout between the tile pieces to fill in the joints. Finally wipe the grout residue.

Step by Step Guide to Employee Satisfaction Surveys

Monday, October 12th, 2009

The benefit of deploying an employee survey on an annual basis has for a long time been widely accepted but many organizations are reluctant to conduct them due to the amount of effort that is required.

Many organizations who have conducted their own internal employee satisfaction surveys use word-processors to design and compile a survey, then go through the effort of printing and distributing the survey and invest time chasing and collecting the completed surveys and then more time transferring the survey response information into a meaningful management report.

Fortunately with the introduction of the Internet and hosted survey websites what was once a time consuming, resource hungry, long winded and cumbersome process is now slick, quick and easy.

Document here is a step by step guide to help implement a survey that will bring considerable benefits to any organization.

Step 1 – Identifying The Need

There are many reasons an organization might benefit from a survey. The following are a few of the common reason why organizations conduct employee satisfaction surveys.

Event Driven

If your organization is about to embark, or is going through, a change management program employee surveys can assist in managing the change, measuring the effectiveness of the change, help to deliver a ‘message’ and gather valuable feedback throughout the change cycle.

Where an organization is experiencing a period of rapid growth employee surveys can make sure that the employees are aware of their reporting and management responsibilities.

Where an organization is suffering from poor moral brought on by either internal or external influences an employee survey can be used to identify the specific concerns of employees so those concerns can be properly addressed.

Where there is an increase in turnover of staff employee surveys can help an organization identify the underlying cause of employee unrest and through their findings help find solutions.

Periodically

As part of a periodic assessment, surveys will help an organization review their personnel and monitor on an individual level job satisfaction, training and career development.

Employee surveys will allow the senior management team the opportunity to look at what makes their organisation tick and confirm, or not, that their ‘top down’ view matches the reality and ‘bottom up’ perspective of their employees.

Employee surveys will help an organization establish good employee/employer communication that will in turn bring direct and indirect benefits.

Step 2 – Management Buy-In

Management buy-in is always desirable for any initiative and many will argue that it is essential to ensure a successful employee survey, however, in some instances the findings of an employee survey can lead to kick-starting a management that has grown complacent and detached from their employees.

Some organization may be fortunate in that the senior management recognize and drive the need for employee surveys, while in others the management may need to first be convinced of the direct and indirect benefits an employee survey will bring.

The level of management commitment to an employee survey will have some bearing on the nature of the survey and to some extent will help determine what questions are to be asked and the manner they are asked.

A management that is supportive of the initiative may have specific areas of concern that they require feedback on or they may give the go ahead simply because they have no reason to think that the level of employee satisfaction throughout the organization is anything other than high.

Step 3 – Designing The Survey

Designing a good survey will take some time and effort but by following the basics of survey design and concentrating on the ‘need to know’ questions and removing the ‘nice to know’ a survey will rapidly take shape.

Determining the exact questions that should be asked will be entirely dependent on the individual organization, its structure and the previously identified primary need and objectives of the employee survey.

When considering what questions to ask consideration should be given to how the results are to be analyzed. For example there is nearly always a wish to ask for individual comments but these free text answers can be very time consuming and cumbersome to analyze and should therefore be used very sparingly.

Online surveys make it practical to conduct multiple smaller surveys than one very long survey and avoid the higher the drop out rate that are associate with longer surveys.

Step 4 – Proof Reading And Testing

Spelling, Grammar and Clarity

Before the survey is published carefully check that there are no spelling and typing mistakes or incorrect grammar. If available it is always recommended that you have a colleague who has not been involved in the survey design to proof read the survey with clean eyes, if no colleague is available try to take a break before checking through the survey again.

Say What You Mean and Mean What You Say

When checking the survey you need to consider the survey from the viewpoint of the respondent, you may know what you mean by each question but will the questions be clear to the employee?

Allow the Respondent to Answer Truthfully

Where the employee will be required to choose from a number of available responses, closed questions, have you allowed the employee to answer accurately? Make use of answer response options like ‘Don’t know’, ‘No comment’ or ‘Not Applicable’ where you have made the question mandatory but the employee may not be able to answer.

Consider allowing the employee to include an ‘Other’ answer but also appreciate that ‘Other’ answers will add to the complexity when analyzing the survey results.

Don’t Require A Response To Questions That May Not Have One

Check that for questions that have been made mandatory that you definitely do require an answer, for example open questions that ask for additional comments should not be mandatory unless you really do require the respondent to write a comment.

Check You Will Be Able To Analyze The Data

Check through the survey again but this time looking at how the results of the survey will be analyzed. Give consideration as to how you will want to analyze the survey data, have you asked the right questions to be able to perform the detailed analysis that you desire? For example if you want to be able to view the detailed response data from the perspective of the different departments, or maybe gender, check you have asked the employee to indicate their own department and/or gender.

Don’t Ask More Questions than you Need to

Consider all the questions in the survey and ensure that they are all ‘need to know’ questions.

Test the Link and Try Completing the Survey

Publish the survey and then send the survey’s link to a number of people who will be willing to test the survey. By completing the survey yourself you will get a feel for how the respondent will view the survey. From your own and the feedback of your colleagues stop and fine tune the survey as required.

Repeat this process until you are happy with the survey.

Check the data

Take time to view the online summary results of the test data and confirm that the data is being collected in a manner that can be properly analyzed and that will give meaningful results.

Step 5 – Promoting And Deploying The Survey

Where the vast majority of employees have access to the Internet or company intranet deploying an online survey is easy, either via email and/or by establishing a link to the survey from your own website or the Intranet.

Where there are some or many employees that do not have direct access to the internet there are a number of alternatives that can be used from issuing the survey in printed form, providing a shared terminal or giving them an incentive to complete the survey at home.

Step 6 – Monitoring

While the survey is in progress you will be able to view the summary results online and also monitor in real-time the number of surveys that have been both started and completed.

After a few days if the number of completed surveys falls short of that expected it is recommended that one or more reminders are sent to employees asking them to complete the survey.

Step 7 – Analyzing The Results

When it comes to analyzing the results data there are no hard and fast rules. Much will depend on the specific survey, the questions that are asked and the number of responses that are received.

Providing the right questions have been asked when the survey data is first analyzed often a number of ‘headline’ results will immediately stand out that will provide you with an overview and an instant assessment of the general mood of the organization.

Where the results give areas of concern a more detailed analysis may be advisable. For example if employees were asked if they felt the organization provided equal opportunities to both genders and 25% gave a negative response it would be useful to know the gender split of the organization and also to look at what the gender split was of the 25% that answered negatively. Was the negative view shared by employees of both genders, consistent throughout the organization, or was it restricted to a particular gender and/or a particular department?

Step 8 – Post Survey Action

The most important step is probably the last. An employee survey will either confirm that the perfect organization exists or it will highlight areas that are less than perfect by identifying individual and common concerns.

It may be that further more detailed surveys are required that target specific areas. For example the survey may reveal that employees working in a particular department are collectively unhappy, but the reasons for their dissatisfaction may not be clear. A highly focused follow-up survey may help reveal the root causes.

When employee surveys are run on a regular basis an organization that has a track record of addressing the issues highlighted by surveys will see their efforts rewarded in the results of subsequent surveys. Almost all organizations have problems and it helps an organization’s moral to see that a channel exists that will identify problems that can then be addressed and resolved.

Summary

These guidelines are intended to help an organization conduct successful employee satisfaction surveys, they are however, only a guide.

By utilizing existing technology and conducting surveys online you are now able to monitor the heart beat of an organization, quickly, easily and at minimal cost.

Golfing In The USA

Thursday, October 8th, 2009

Golf has been a long time sport of many in the United States. There are many different beautiful golf courses that you can be a part of, and you could spend your life traveling through all of the states and enjoying each and every golf course.

The famous ones, such as the Pebble Beach golf course, allow you to golf alongside some of the best golfers in the world. You might get to see a tournament, and you might get to play a round of golf knowing that there are professionals a couple of holes ahead of you.

The most amazing thing about the sport of golf in this United States is that no matter which state you are in you can golf in a place that is completely different and beautiful. Golfing alongside deer and nature in wooded golf courses in states like Virginia and Vermont gives you a chance to come to grips with nature and to explore the beauty of being alone in the woods with your golf club and your ball. However, golfing near the ocean, in course in Oregon, Florida, or California, as well as any other bordering state, gives you a chance to be in a fresh and amazing environment, where you can look out on great expanses of beauty and commune with the ocean in that way. If neither of these seems like it might interest you, try the golf courses in the Midwest states. Golfing in Wyoming or South Dakota or Iowa gives you chance to look at the beauty of nothingness – areas where you can see for miles and miles and see nothing but flat land. These public golf courses give you wonderful opportunities to see the sunsets on the prairies of our fine country. If mountains are your thing, golfing against these backdrops in Utah or Montana is a great idea because the rugged terrain that you will encounter can be matched like no other in the world.

Those that do not know golf in the United States feel that each golf course is the same. The beauty of this sport lies in the fact that no matter where you go, even if you are performing the same motions, you’ll be surrounded by something completely different each time, and you’ll be allowed to find ways to give yourself the chance to have this beauty with you no matter where you golf in the United States.

The Best Personal Trainer in Plano TX

Monday, October 5th, 2009

My husband and I have been working out with a Plano personal trainer from Lady Trainers To Go for a year now and absolutely love it. We wanted to find a new activity to share together. We’re not getting any younger so we thought that focusing on our health was the way to go. Neither one of us are huge fans of the gym, so it was nice to see that a personal trainer in Plano would come workout with us in the comfort of our own home. More importantly, our in-home trainer would work with our personal schedule. Whenever was most convenient for us to meet, our trainer would accommodate us!

Over the past year our personal trainer Plano has taught us so much. We’ve learned how to manage our time, how to stay dedicated to our fitness goals and how to maintain our results. We love working out with our trainer so much we plan on sticking with Lady Trainers To Go for a long time. Our trainer has also given us so much variety in our workouts. My husband and I have been enjoying all sorts of different exercises.

To this day, we still look forward to our workouts. Now that we’ve gotten into a steady routine with our in-home trainer, we plan to start meeting with the nutritionist. Being able to have a trainer and nutritionist staffed at the same company makes getting healthy so convenient. Both of us feel that this is a great way for anyone to get back in shape. Make the call–you’ll be glad you did.

Here Are Some Drop Shipping Product Strategies

Monday, August 17th, 2009

There are actually tons of ordinary people, many like you, who have started earning an income on the web. These folks did not create any great new invention, nor do they make their own product line. In fact, they don’t even stock the products they sell! How is this possible? It simple to do with a drop shipping business.

So how do you get into the drop shipping business? It’s really very simple – you can accomplish it with your own web site, or even with no web site by using services such as eBay or Squidoo. Create a PayPal account, put your items online, and you are in business. But where do the products come from?

The technique of drop shipping has been with us for a long time – even preceeding the Internet. The way it works is simple – you promote and sell the merchandise- and your drop ship supplier ships the orders to your customers – with your firm’s name on the invoice. The customer has no idea or cares that the product did not come from you directly. Some great product ideas include drop ship electronic products, drop ship clothing or drop ship electronics.

The benefits of the system is easy to see – no inventory costs, no warehouse, no shipping headaches. You need to use a reliable source to find your vendors, however. Don’t use web sites that try to sell you products directly, only purchase direct from the firm that actually produces or distributes the products to other businesses. You will be surprised how many product makers will allow dropshipping of their products.
